RSPB Trip on 29th March

Today we took our older preschoolers to the RSPB, for some fun in the woods.

We were amazed at how big this tree was. Whilst we were looking at the tree we could hear a woodpecker hammering away at another tree.

We made our way down to the den area.

2017-03-29 13.59.13

We found a great area to do some den building and added to the den already built. The children worked together, talking about what stick or branch would fit into which hole.

This huge fallen tree was great for climbing and balancing on. The children found a hidey hole and a tunnel under the tree and used the area to act out their game and role play. One child got a stick and drew lots of shapes- circles and squares and then tried to write her name in the pathway.

We walked back to the lodge to have some snack and wait for the parents. Whilst we waited the children made up a story. Each of the children joined in and liked adding their piece of the story. Once upon a time, there was a lion in the jungle who met a big black elephant. They found a beach and around the beach was a moat. In the moat there was a shark and a dolphin. In the middle of the moat was a man who decided to go fishing with the lion and the elephant. they did some diving and found some treasure of toys and some chocolate coins. Another shark came along and pulled the plug!!! They lost all the water until it rained so that all the fishes that lived in the sea could live. The end.

A few of our activities on one day.

On Wednesday we took our older children to Sutton Lower school for our usual half termly visit. The children loved having a ride in the cars and then avoiding the puddles as we made our way to school. Once at school we had a brief play in the class before the sun came out and we were able to play outside in the sand, doing some digging for gold in the dirt and then fishing for feet! We had a lovely play in the field exploring the lovely wooden pirate ship and climbing frame. Then we met the parents and carers in the front car park.

Thank you so much to Sutton for having us, we’re already looking forward to our visit next term.

The children really enjoyed working on their gifts for their Mummy’s. The artwork on the cups will fade over time if put in the dishwasher.

Bubbly water play and drums

Last week has been lots of fun, carrying on with the week before’s interests- lots of water and splashing. We added bubbly water to the tuff spots, pots, teapots, bowls, sponges, syringes and spoons.

All these activities of squeezing the sponge and using the syringes to fill the pots, will help the muscles the children need to write- grow, form and work at becoming stronger. The pouring and measuring of water will enhance the children’s mathematical skills by allowing them to work out how much they need to fill the pot up, how heavy the pots is and that it gets lighter as the water is poured into  bowl. They develop and idea of whether the small pot will hold the same as the large pot. They are doing such fantastic learning but as far as they are concerned they are having lots of fun and playing.

We got our beautiful drums out this week, another interest followed. The children had helped themselves to the beaters from the instrument drawer and try out the noises on the tables, chairs and tuff spots in the room. We had 4 drums between 18 children. The drums were spaced between the children, those that did not have a drum, clapped their hands. They all listened well and practised doing loud, slow, fast and quiet by rubbing their hand over the drum. To ensure all the children had a go with the drum, we said ‘stop’ and used the sign for stop, then the children had to pass their drum to the next person.

Our activities this week were:-

2017-03-07 10.52.12

The children tried to build a tower as tall as them using the Duplo. They worked hard together, whilst one held the tower the others would find the bricks they needed. Then they would swap over. It was a real joint effort and only fell apart when the tower got too tall to be added to. That didn’t put them off they tried again, giving the tower a bigger base to see if that would make it more stable.

I wonder what fun and learning will happen this week.

Gloop and all this mess

So Monday morning we all  ‘made playdoh’. The children worked together to measure the ingredients and mix them taking it in turns. They discussed what colour they would like and added it in. Michelle took the sloppy mixture away to then bring back lovely warm playdoh. Each child marvelled at how warm it felt and different it was from when it was in the pot- a gloopy mess.

2017-02-27-14-47-12

3 children got out the bricks and worked together to make their models. They supported each other as they tried to make their buildings balance and all giggled lots when they fell down. They were joined by 2 more children and split off into 2 groups doing their own buildings.

Later on in the week we got out the treasure boxes. The children adore this activity as there are lots of things that wouldn’t normally be played with. Karen talks to them about what they are handling, how it feels, whether it light or heavy, is it bumpy or smooth? These little boxes stimulate lots of talk and thinking about what the ‘surprises’ are and what they are used for, plus how the children can make stories around them.

2017-03-01-10-28-26

Dancing on a Monday morning is so much fun with Jodie. The children are so eager to see her when she comes in, this week we had requests for some of the dances- the circus one is such a hit as one minute we’re all pretending to be silly clowns, then we’re acting like very big strong men lifting very heavy weights then we move onto the tightrope, trying to balance and not fall off the thin rope. All I can say it’s so much fun.

We found the chains and S hooks, and spent some time working together to measure the chains against each other. We found some very long chains and one very short chain. The S hooks were useful in hanging all the chains from them.

Gloop play- The children added the dry cornflour to the very messy paint tray, added some water bit by bit and then mixed with their hands. They ended up with gloop in their hair, on faces, all over their clothes and lots on the floor. Did you know Gloop goes a long way if you clap your hands? The staff took the tray outside and added more water to it. The children dressed themselves in waterproofs and wellies before going outside and having a very big splash in our new puddle. They go very wet and they loved it.

On Wednesday afternoon we took the older preschool children to Potton Lower School for our half termly visit. The children loved exploring outside, finding ‘drinking chocolate’ in the water, pouring it out and ‘sharing’ it between themselves. A few of them had lots of fun riding on the bikes and scooters, taking turns with the reception class children. They met with old friends and played on the fireman’s pole, seeing who could go down it. Inside we played with the duplo and then had a go at cleaning the giant teeth with a huge toothbrush- that stimulated lots of questions and thoughts.

All in all, another fun week at Woodentops.

Chinese New Year and Construction

We started off the week by extending the children’s fascination with building and construction. Staff got out our ample supply of boxes. The children built towers, arranged the boxes in groups and sat in them sharing the small space- working out how many could fit in the box with all their toys too.

They got out the pens and drew lots on them, then used our tool box full of saws to test out how easy it would be to cut the boxes. Then the children made their own individual cars, with steering wheels included, and took great pleasure in showing their parents on collection what they had done.

We also spent lots of time playing with the rice and chinese table set, filling up and emptying pots, using spoons, scoops and chopsticks. Lots of chat about the different colours of rice and how to use chopsticks.

2017-02-02-14-18-44

We made some red envelopes and lots of shiny money, to bring good fortune.2017-02-02-14-18-36

On Friday we decided to make Roosters, to celebrate the animal of the Chinese New Year. The children suggested sticking on lots of feathers and they put on lots of beaks. I love the process they go through as they make their products, each one looks very different and the amount of talking that happens as they plan their design and give each other ideas.

The children get so excited about taking their parents or carers, at pick up time, over the table where their name is and showing them what they have made.

This week ( 23/1/17) at Woodentops

On Monday we discovered the the toy animals and leaves in the tuff spots had all managed to get very frozen. The children worked hard together to free the animals and leaves and we ended up with a lot of ice on the grass.

Afterwards the children did some ‘obstacle course’ making use of the decking boards, crates and stepping logs. They worked really well together, listening to and sharing ideas with each other.

On Tuesday we had Simon come in from Triumph Wellbeing. The children helped tidy away the obstacle course from the day before and move the play equipment to the side ready to do lots of fun running around with Simon.

On Wednesday, we had the birds out from the RSPb, who sang beautifully, and made bird feeders for the Big Bird watch at the weekend. We hope the children managed to do some counting.

On Thursday we made donuts, oh my, they were delicious.

The children worked with Jackie, to mix the ingredients, and then watched from a safe distance whilst Jackie poured the mixture into the pans. They helped check whether the donuts were cooked and were very forward in their advice for Jackie. We made plain ones and then got a bit adventurous and made chocolate donuts- they were just as nice. They sampled the donuts for snack. Later on they iced the donuts with all the edible sparkly bits left over from Christmas.

On Friday we had the stay and players in. A fun morning was had by all. We made bird feeders using pipe cleaners and cheerios. Lots of threading and a little tasting- just to check the cheerios were ok for the birds!

Cooking Pastry Pizza’s

This week the children chose to do Pastry pizza’s out of our cooking book. They wanted to have cheese, tomato and  sweetcorn.

Each child cut their piece of pastry off the block before rolling it out on the table, they sprinkled flour on the table and rolling pin to stop the pastry sticking.

Then they added cheese and sweetcorn to the top. Each child cut up their tomatoes using the knife and then added them to the top of the pizza.

There was enough left over for a big pizza to be made for snack in the afternoon which was delicious.

Our first week back in 2017

Our week began with 3 home visits meeting 3 lovely children and their parents, preparing them for their first couple of weeks at Woodentops.

Wednesday we started back at the preschool and had a lovely morning with the children getting out the instruments and singing ‘Jingle bells’ and a few other Christmas songs we had practised for our carol concert in December. We made purple playdoh and added sparkles in to it. the children then made cup cakes, patterns from their clothes into the dough and made large and small balls rolling the dough out with their hands. In the afternoon we got out our magnetic balls, wands and geomags, as in the morning we had 2 children going round testing what was magnetic with the large horseshoe magnets. They really enjoyed using the geomags and shapes to make pots and containers. We had lots of discussion about why they stuck together and what they were creating.

Thursday, we had picnics every where, the children used the table cloths on the floor and found lots of different types of food and crockery to set their picnic up. They invited others to join them, sang songs and they read some books. Later on they used the material and tuff spot stand to build a huge den, used it in their obstacle course and and again invited others to join them. The music instruments came out again.

Friday, with it being so beautifully frosty outside, we went for a long walk around the football field, looking at what ‘Jack Frost’ had brought in overnight. They found very icy leaves and looked at the patterns on them and noticed how crunchy they were. We had lots of comments about how cold it was.

Looking for colours outside with the RSPB

On Wednesday this week, we had Nicky and Amanda come from the RSPB to do some colour searching in our outside area.

To start off with Nicky read a very interesting story to the children who joined in enthusiastically with questions and answers. Then we divided into 2 groups, the ones that stayed inside decided to make tea and coffee plus some cakes for those outside, one child buried his ‘man’ with leaves that we had found earlier and we spent time looking for him.

The children outside each had a paper bag with a colour card in it. The idea was that the children would search around and see if they could find all the colours on the card from natural things that are outside.

We found lots of things- yellow, red, green and brown leaves, some of them were nearly orange; grey, black and white feathers; lots of sticks- large, small, long and thin- some were easy to break, others were quite ‘bumpy’; white flowers; and a very long wriggly worm- we decided not to collect him!!!!

Then we sat down and looked at what Amanda had found in her garden that morning. We all carefully touched the spiky shell of a conker and were amazex at how soft the inside bit was. We fitted the conker into its case too. We touched the spiky leaves of the holly tree and spotted the red berries. We made a hedgehog out the pieces we found, using conkers as his eyes and then covered him with leaves ready for his hibernation. The children loved learning and talking about what they found, what everything felt like and how we had to be careful of the hedgehog when he was hibernating.

Back inside we listened to some some bird songs and tried to work out which bird it was. We talked about the robin who visits us daily sometimes popping in as we set up the hall in the morning.

The children loved having the two ladies in and are looking forward to their next visit. Thank you so much to Amanda and Nicky.

Growing Potatoes at Woodentops

On Thursday 21st July, before Simon  from Triumph Wellbeing came in for the last ‘Team game’ session of this school year, we decided to dig up our potatoes. There were lots to be found.

We had lots of talk about the differing sizes of the potatoes, we found a worm in the soil with a few other bugs. The worm was ‘saved’ and put on the grass so he find a new home.

Michelle took the potatoes inside to wash and boil them so we could make potato salad for our party on Friday.

Once they were cooled the Thursday afternoon children chopped the potatoes up small, put them in the 2 bowls, added some onion and then some mayonaise. They gave it a good stir before putting it all in the fridge.
