Gloop and all this mess

So Monday morning we all  ‘made playdoh’. The children worked together to measure the ingredients and mix them taking it in turns. They discussed what colour they would like and added it in. Michelle took the sloppy mixture away to then bring back lovely warm playdoh. Each child marvelled at how warm it felt and different it was from when it was in the pot- a gloopy mess.

3 children got out the bricks and worked together to make their models. They supported each other as they tried to make their buildings balance and all giggled lots when they fell down. They were joined by 2 more children and split off into 2 groups doing their own buildings.

Later on in the week we got out the treasure boxes. The children adore this activity as there are lots of things that wouldn’t normally be played with. Karen talks to them about what they are handling, how it feels, whether it light or heavy, is it bumpy or smooth? These little boxes stimulate lots of talk and thinking about what the ‘surprises’ are and what they are used for, plus how the children can make stories around them.

Dancing on a Monday morning is so much fun with Jodie. The children are so eager to see her when she comes in, this week we had requests for some of the dances- the circus one is such a hit as one minute we’re all pretending to be silly clowns, then we’re acting like very big strong men lifting very heavy weights then we move onto the tightrope, trying to balance and not fall off the thin rope. All I can say it’s so much fun.

We found the chains and S hooks, and spent some time working together to measure the chains against each other. We found some very long chains and one very short chain. The S hooks were useful in hanging all the chains from them.

Gloop play- The children added the dry cornflour to the very messy paint tray, added some water bit by bit and then mixed with their hands. They ended up with gloop in their hair, on faces, all over their clothes and lots on the floor. Did you know Gloop goes a long way if you clap your hands? The staff took the tray outside and added more water to it. The children dressed themselves in waterproofs and wellies before going outside and having a very big splash in our new puddle. They go very wet and they loved it.

On Wednesday afternoon we took the older preschool children to Potton Lower School for our half termly visit. The children loved exploring outside, finding ‘drinking chocolate’ in the water, pouring it out and ‘sharing’ it between themselves. A few of them had lots of fun riding on the bikes and scooters, taking turns with the reception class children. They met with old friends and played on the fireman’s pole, seeing who could go down it. Inside we played with the duplo and then had a go at cleaning the giant teeth with a huge toothbrush- that stimulated lots of questions and thoughts.

All in all, another fun week at Woodentops.

Disco dancing and writing shopping lists

This week started off at Woodentops with a ‘drive’ to Tescos. Before leaving, the children thought of what they needed to buy; so each made a list, using the stubby crayons and making the paper into list shapes by cutting them up.

They sat on the sofa with the wooden steering wheel, made sure everyone was buckled in and then drove down to Tescos. Once at Tescos each child unbuckled their seat belt, got a shopping basket and with their list went round ‘Tescos’ picking the stuff they needed off the shelf. Filling their baskets very full before climbing back into the car ready for the journey back to Woodentops. Back at Woodentops they showed the members of staff what they had bought and then wanted to go back to the shops again.

The next day this was extended more, this time the children walked to the shops, and took things off the shelf (along the corridor), paid at the till (table in the corridor) and then brought all the groceries back to Woodentops.

On Wednesday when it was so beautiful outside, the children discovered our sequin cushion covers sparkled even more. They found that the sunlight made them sparkle on to the ceiling and then had a fantastic time dancing to their music in the ‘disco’.

On Thursday we did mini bootcamp inside with Simon which was a novelty- we had Storm Doris to thank for that as it was way too windy outside. The children were able to run around inside, something that is never done, not when we have a roomful of toys, equipment and children. So today the floor was cleared with the help of the children and they had a good giggle with Simon.

In the afternoon, some of us went outside to collect the fallen twigs out of the trees. We wanted to make stickmen with them. It was very fun seeing the wind swirl the leaves round in a funnel. Back inside we shared what we had found and then made stickmen, fishing rods and wands to name a few. We also found some moss and all noticed it was very soft and springy.

On Friday we had the ‘Stay and Players’ into play.

We added the sticks to the playdoh and this is what they made.

We went outside, the weather was gorgeous and the children used the leaves, sand, stones and shells to do lots of cooking in our pots and pans. Some children set up an obstacle course with the bread baskets, milk crates and the wood planks. There was lots of conversations going on- sharing ideas, working together and planning out how they were going to set everything up. Then turn taking as each child had a go on the obstacle course. The children helped tidy away all the toys before going in and having a story.

I have to say we’ve had a lovely first week back after the half term.

Chinese New Year and Construction

We started off the week by extending the children’s fascination with building and construction. Staff got out our ample supply of boxes. The children built towers, arranged the boxes in groups and sat in them sharing the small space- working out how many could fit in the box with all their toys too.

They got out the pens and drew lots on them, then used our tool box full of saws to test out how easy it would be to cut the boxes. Then the children made their own individual cars, with steering wheels included, and took great pleasure in showing their parents on collection what they had done.

We also spent lots of time playing with the rice and chinese table set, filling up and emptying pots, using spoons, scoops and chopsticks. Lots of chat about the different colours of rice and how to use chopsticks.

We made some red envelopes and lots of shiny money, to bring good fortune.2017-02-02-14-18-36

On Friday we decided to make Roosters, to celebrate the animal of the Chinese New Year. The children suggested sticking on lots of feathers and they put on lots of beaks. I love the process they go through as they make their products, each one looks very different and the amount of talking that happens as they plan their design and give each other ideas.

The children get so excited about taking their parents or carers, at pick up time, over the table where their name is and showing them what they have made.

This week ( 23/1/17) at Woodentops

On Monday we discovered the the toy animals and leaves in the tuff spots had all managed to get very frozen. The children worked hard together to free the animals and leaves and we ended up with a lot of ice on the grass.

Afterwards the children did some ‘obstacle course’ making use of the decking boards, crates and stepping logs. They worked really well together, listening to and sharing ideas with each other.

On Tuesday we had Simon come in from Triumph Wellbeing. The children helped tidy away the obstacle course from the day before and move the play equipment to the side ready to do lots of fun running around with Simon.

On Wednesday, we had the birds out from the RSPb, who sang beautifully, and made bird feeders for the Big Bird watch at the weekend. We hope the children managed to do some counting.

On Thursday we made donuts, oh my, they were delicious.

The children worked with Jackie, to mix the ingredients, and then watched from a safe distance whilst Jackie poured the mixture into the pans. They helped check whether the donuts were cooked and were very forward in their advice for Jackie. We made plain ones and then got a bit adventurous and made chocolate donuts- they were just as nice. They sampled the donuts for snack. Later on they iced the donuts with all the edible sparkly bits left over from Christmas.

On Friday we had the stay and players in. A fun morning was had by all. We made bird feeders using pipe cleaners and cheerios. Lots of threading and a little tasting- just to check the cheerios were ok for the birds!

Jewels, Stones and Marble Play

So this morning we set up the tuff spot with lots of pompoms, bowls, tongs and spoons. The children started off transferring the pompoms from one bowl to another using different sized spoons, scoops, tongs and measuring cups. We had lots of talk about who had the most, the sizes of the pompoms and and how they could fit into different sized pots.

The children enjoyed it so much, we decided to extend their learning by adding some hard, shiny stones. My goodness, they liked the noise of the stones in the metal bowl and colander and spent time stirring them round and round using any tool they could plus their hands. Some of the children poured the stones from one pot to another and then into their hands.

We decide to extend their learning by adding a little more variety with some very rolly marbles, again, all different sizes.

We had lots of discussion about the noises they made, the different colours they could see and the weight of them.

Cooking Pastry Pizza’s

This week the children chose to do Pastry pizza’s out of our cooking book. They wanted to have cheese, tomato and  sweetcorn.

Each child cut their piece of pastry off the block before rolling it out on the table, they sprinkled flour on the table and rolling pin to stop the pastry sticking.

Then they added cheese and sweetcorn to the top. Each child cut up their tomatoes using the knife and then added them to the top of the pizza.

There was enough left over for a big pizza to be made for snack in the afternoon which was delicious.

Our first week back in 2017

Our week began with 3 home visits meeting 3 lovely children and their parents, preparing them for their first couple of weeks at Woodentops.

Wednesday we started back at the preschool and had a lovely morning with the children getting out the instruments and singing ‘Jingle bells’ and a few other Christmas songs we had practised for our carol concert in December. We made purple playdoh and added sparkles in to it. the children then made cup cakes, patterns from their clothes into the dough and made large and small balls rolling the dough out with their hands. In the afternoon we got out our magnetic balls, wands and geomags, as in the morning we had 2 children going round testing what was magnetic with the large horseshoe magnets. They really enjoyed using the geomags and shapes to make pots and containers. We had lots of discussion about why they stuck together and what they were creating.

Thursday, we had picnics every where, the children used the table cloths on the floor and found lots of different types of food and crockery to set their picnic up. They invited others to join them, sang songs and they read some books. Later on they used the material and tuff spot stand to build a huge den, used it in their obstacle course and and again invited others to join them. The music instruments came out again.

Friday, with it being so beautifully frosty outside, we went for a long walk around the football field, looking at what ‘Jack Frost’ had brought in overnight. They found very icy leaves and looked at the patterns on them and noticed how crunchy they were. We had lots of comments about how cold it was.

Woodentops in the New Year

In January 2017, Woodentops will be extending its hours to include Tuesday afternoons. This means we will be opening from 8.45 to 3.45 Mondays to Thursdays and 8.45 to 1pm on Fridays. Looking to the future we plan to open from 8am to 4pm possibly from The Summer term but definitely from Sept 2017.

Children at Woodentops are looked after in small groups with well qualified and experienced adults.

We have dance once a week on Mondays from Jodie (Jodie Robertson School of Dance) and team games from Simon (Triumph Wellbeing). The team games are on Tuesdays and Thursdays so that as many children at Woodentops are able to access the fun session.

We do cooking once a week on a rolling programme so all the children get a chance to practice their culinary skills. The children what they would like to cook. Recently they made Christmas cakes and then decorated them with royal icing.

We have a great variety of toys and use a lot of natural resources to develop and enhance the children’s learning.

In January we have some spaces available for 2 year olds and 3 to 4 year olds. Please contact us on 07947892823 or email woodentopspotton@gmail.com for more information.

Looking for colours outside with the RSPB

On Wednesday this week, we had Nicky and Amanda come from the RSPB to do some colour searching in our outside area.

To start off with Nicky read a very interesting story to the children who joined in enthusiastically with questions and answers. Then we divided into 2 groups, the ones that stayed inside decided to make tea and coffee plus some cakes for those outside, one child buried his ‘man’ with leaves that we had found earlier and we spent time looking for him.

The children outside each had a paper bag with a colour card in it. The idea was that the children would search around and see if they could find all the colours on the card from natural things that are outside.

We found lots of things- yellow, red, green and brown leaves, some of them were nearly orange; grey, black and white feathers; lots of sticks- large, small, long and thin- some were easy to break, others were quite ‘bumpy’; white flowers; and a very long wriggly worm- we decided not to collect him!!!!

Then we sat down and looked at what Amanda had found in her garden that morning. We all carefully touched the spiky shell of a conker and were amazex at how soft the inside bit was. We fitted the conker into its case too. We touched the spiky leaves of the holly tree and spotted the red berries. We made a hedgehog out the pieces we found, using conkers as his eyes and then covered him with leaves ready for his hibernation. The children loved learning and talking about what they found, what everything felt like and how we had to be careful of the hedgehog when he was hibernating.

Back inside we listened to some some bird songs and tried to work out which bird it was. We talked about the robin who visits us daily sometimes popping in as we set up the hall in the morning.

The children loved having the two ladies in and are looking forward to their next visit. Thank you so much to Amanda and Nicky.

Our Trip to the RSPB

Today we visited the RSPB. The children moved the branches around carefully, sometimes working together to carry the branches over and then placing them up against the tree. They talked about how heavy they were, what they were going to do when planning the dens, organising each other into ‘work ‘parties to make the den they wanted.

The children also had a paper bag each where they collected anything and everything that caught their eye. Some had big pieces of wood, others had leaves, bits of bark and feathers. We all collected some bits of wood and bark for our African Land Snails.

This is a nest they made too.
